We are very much looking forward to welcome Dr Hongwei Bao as our Marie Jahoda Fellow at the Ruhr University Bochum in the winter term 24/25.
Dr Hongwei Bao is Associate Professor in Media Studies at the University of Nottingham, UK, where he co-directs the Centre for Critical Theory and Cultural Studies. As curator and producer Dr Bao curated countless community art projects. He is the author of Queer Comrades: Gay Identity and Tongzhi Activism in Postsocialist China (NIAS Press, 2018), Queer China: Lesbian and Gay Literature and Visual Culture under Postsocialism (Routledge, 2020), Queer Media in China (Routledge, 2021), Contemporary Chinese Queer Performance (Routledge, 2022), and Queering the Asian Diaspora (Sage, 2024). He coedits Contemporary Queer Chinese Art (Bloomsbury, 2023), Queer Literature in the Sinosphere (Bloomsbury, 2024) and Routledge Handbook of Chinese Gender and Sexuality (Routledge, 2024). He is also the co-editor of two book series: Oyster: Feminist and Queer Approaches to Arts, Cultures, and Genders (de Gruyter) and Queering China: Transnational Genders and Sexualities (Bloomsbury). As curator and producer, Dr Bao curated Nottingham Chinese Independent Film Festival, Queer Arts in the Pandemic Festival, Queer Zines, Drag-Up!, Queer Across the Waves, Poetics of Migration, and other community arts projects. He is a Trustee of UK New Artists, an arts charity dedicated to supporting young and emerging artists.
While in Bochum, Hongwei Bao will be involved in research activities surrounding the international workshop “Queer Avantgarde”, which is taking place in December. At RUB, Hongwei Bao will work in particular with Prof. Änne Söll from the Institute for Art History. The two of them, together with Susanne Huber (Uni Bremen), co-edit the above-mentioned series Oyster. Feminist and Queer Approaches to Arts, Cultures, and Genders (de Gruyter).

Hongwei Bao will give a public lecture on 4 December 2024 at 6:15 pm within the context of the MaJaC Colloquium. The title of the lecture is ‚Art of the Cool Kids‘: Locating Queer Art in China The lecture is also the keynote for the workshop „Queer Avantgarde“.
The workshop Queer Avantgarde will take place on 4-5 December 2024. The all-day programme on the 5th will take place in the RUB Art Collections. Register for the workshop by 30 November by queeravantgarde@rub.de.
